SOLAR EFFECTS

THE COMPOSITION OF SUNLIGHT

The sunlight consists of two spectra of rays: visible spectra and invisible spectra.

The visible spectrum consists of seven colours :  Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. These Colours, and their intensity, have deep impact on the psychological mood and thought process of a human. While creating a lining space one should use a balanced exposure to these rays.

The invisible spectrum is found on either side of the visible spectrum and consists of the Ultra Violet and the Infra Red. The Ultra-Violet (UV) rays have a shorter wavelength than the visible light and can kill bacteria as well as aid in the synthesis of Vitamin D in living beings. The Infra Red rays have a longer wavelength than the visible light rays and they are the cause for the heat in the sunlight.

WHY IS SUN CONSIDERED A “LIFE- GIVING” ?

Rays from the sun are necessary to sustain life on earth and to provide light. Because of these reasons Indians have been worship the Sun as God from ancient times.

Sun rays are necessary ingredient for manufacturing of glucose by the plants. It is energy rich food made from Carbon dioxide of the air and water in the presence of sunlight. In this process oxygen is released in the air. The Glucose and the oxygen are both necessary to sustain life on earth.

The bright light of the Sun illuminates the Earth. We are able to see colours because of the sunlight / light. As the sun rays contain all the possible color variations. When sunlight falls on the object, all the other colors of the light are absorbed by the object, except the colour of the object itself, hence we see the colour. Thus, an orange appears orange as it reflects orange light.

HOW IS SUNLIGHT BENEFICIAL TO OUR BODIES ?

When the sunlight falls directly on our skin, it helps in the process of creation of Vitamin D. It has been noted that vitamin D helps in absorption of calcium that is required for the strength of bones. Also, due to exposure to sunlight there is increase in the amount of endorphins in our blood which creates a feeling of well being.

Sunlight helps detoxify the liver and increases endurance by toning the muscles. Sunlight is necessary to kill germs helping to heal the wounds faster.  And there are many more good reasons that an human body require the exposure to sunlight.

Due to medical reasons and for the fitness of the body it is necessary that we expose our body to sunlight for at least 15 minutes a day.

HOW VAASTU USES THE BENEFITS OF THE SUN ?

The intensity of the sunlight changes with change in location on the Earth. Vaastu Shastra takes these changes into account for designing the house. Vaastu also considers the seasons due to the position of sun.

Looking at the location of India on the globe, we receive the sunlight constantly from the north and morning light from the east. While the sunsets the more harmful Infrared rays are in the west. Because of which the mornings are cool and evenings are a bit warmer.

Vaastu, considers the sun as the life giving or supporting element. Hence the principle, that the west and the south walls should be thicker and heavier that east and north respectively. There are many more principles based on the moment of the earth about its axis and around the sun.

The construction of the foundation is entirely based on the season on the earth, which are directly the result of the intensity of the sunrays falling on the earth.

THE EFFECT OF THE SUN WHILE HOUSE PLANNING

Vaastu Shastra describes in detail the planning of the house or the building entirely based on the impact of the sun. Here are few points to consider :

As the basic principle of vaastu shastra, the energy should flow with out hindrance, Obstacles are considered as Dosha. Hence, there should be no obstacles, tall trees, high compound walls on the North and East sides of the house, such that there is constant sunlight from the North in the morning engulf the house, brighten it and kill the germs and bacteria that would have multiplied during the night.

Similarly Open spaces such as Balconies are more desirable in the East or North area.

The underground water source or water bodies such as ponds etc preferred on the East or North sides of the house; so that the water can be purified by the sunlight.

It is advisable to have the kitchen either in the East or south-east side of the house, so that the morning. The sunrays of morning are helpful in keeping the atmosphere of the kitchen healthy.

Toilets, Store rooms and other rooms that are not frequently used are advised in west area of the house. In evening the area in west is comparatively hotter, thus any comfort area should be avoided in west area.

As trees cast shadow, it is advisable to have tall trees on the South and West sides. Such placement of tall trees prevents the south or west areas of the house from direct sunlight.
